Well, it’s not exactly Agro-Know, but our colleague Lito Pateraki, who is travelling to as a member of the winning team of the Greek Ecotrophelia 2014 Competition. The team consists of students and stuff of the Laboratory of Food Quality Control and Hygiene of the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece (AUA) who participated in the Greek competition and won with their tasty Carobites idea, a “Ready-To-Eat, sweet, on the go snack of high nutritional value based on carob combined with the innovative technology of edible coatings“, as Lito explained.
Now the team will participate in the European Ecotrophelia Competition, which is taking place in Paris, France, between 19 & 20 October 2014, during the International Exhibition of Food and Beverages (SIAL) (from 19 to 23 October 2014). During this competition, the Greek team will compete against the rest of the European ones and…may the best team win! This year, 16 European countries, namely Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom compete for the 1st place at the SIAL fair – 15 000 € total will be given in prizes!
For those who are not aware of the concept of Ecotrophelia: It is a competition taking place at National and EU-level, rewarding student teams who have developed the best eco-innovative food products. In fact, it is something like the Champions League in Food Innovation. Winners of the National Competitions are invited to participate to the EU one and compete with the rest of the National Competition winners. Since 2011, within the framework of the European Food Innovation Student Awards, more than 60 national finals have been organised by 550 universities involving 3,000 students. Forty products born through ECOTROPHELIA have been subject to industrial transfers and marketed in collaboration with food processing and distribution companies. You can find more information about the Ecotrophelia 2014 European competition here (PDF)
If you happen to visit the SIAL Exhibition, you can drop by the ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE Stand – Hall 5 Stand 5aP009 from 19th to 23rd October 2014 and see what the teams are up to!
We wish all the best to the Carobites team; we are keeping our fingers crossed and send our positive vibes to them!
