We recently had the opportunity to discuss about a new idea that allows sharing of agricultural tools & machinery among farmers, with Thomi Giotopoulou, one of the people working on this concept. The idea seems to be really promising, especially in the case of Greece (but also for similar countries), where farms are limited in size and farmers do not always have the funds required for actually buying an expensive piece of agricultural machinery; instead they are willing to share the equipment they already have and in return borrow a tool that they do not own and use it for as long as needed before returning it to its owner.
If you are interested in this concept, you can read more in the following text, kindly prepared by Thomi Giotopoulou, an Agro-Know collaborator, for the Agro-Know blog.
So, what is mermix?
mermix is a new, innovative web service that has multiple purposes and goals; the most important of all is that it provides the rural community, such as farmers (small, medium or professionals) the opportunity to easily reach and access agricultural machinery and check their availability through the web.
How was this idea born?
The idea behind mermix was born due to the daily interaction with Stevia Hellas Coop‘s farmers, which led to the conclusion that a large number of unexploited machineries exist while at the same time a big number of farmers have the problem of machinery lack. Then we realized that in order to meet the need of farmers to reach farm machinery with an easy way, without facing the problems of communicating with several people and losing valuable time for doing this procedure, a new innovative service should be established that solves these major issues and provides them easy online access.
So, mermix has the purpose to bring in communication both sides and skip the lengthy process. The renter or the owner will reach the site and they will fulfill their expectations and needs within some minutes by a very quick and easy process.
What is mermix based on?
The main idea that mermix is based on, is the sharing economy model, collaborative consumption and P2P services. In Greece, many sites that are based on this idea have reached great success and have created a sharing community around them.
What are the mission and the vision of mermix?
Our mission is to improve the agricultural world by connecting farmers and help them organize and exploit better their assets.
Our vision is to meet farmer needs through the creation of services, products and activities which emerge from systemic and holistic approach of the field and rural areas.
First of all, our next immediate step is to publish the second version of the mermix web app, based on reviews and feedback received from our real users. As regards our services, they will be also expanded into providing online space to people whose business is based on the field (e.g. agronomists, farm workers) and give them the opportunity to build their own profile and provide their services through mermix. Last but not least, we aim at exploiting our model not only in Greece, but also and in other European countries who face similar problems of equipment management.
We would like to thank Thomi for sharing early info about the mermix project with us 🙂
You can read more about mermix at their Facebook page, Twitter account and LinkedIn page (most appropriate for the non-Greeks); the first version of their website is currently published , so stay tuned for more info!
