“Organic-AgriWare – an application for the organic agriculture community” (2015-2016) is a project co-funded by the SmartAgriFood and ICT-AGRI projects, funded by the European Commission’s ERA-NET scheme under the 7th Framework Programme for Research. The project aims to provide advisors and farmers with context-based access to organic community knowledge powered by the Agro-Know Stem. in association with the project partners ICROFS and SEGES.
The Organic-AgriWare project will have its kick-off meeting on 15/4/2015, in Athens, Greece, hosted by Agro-Know.
About the project
The problem that the project is about to solve is the difficulty for organic agriculture stakeholders to access the acquired knowledge which is disperse at different online and offline locations. As the organic agriculture market is rapidly growing worldwide and the demand for organic products is increasing, farmers and advisors need information for short-term and long-term planning in order to make the right decisions and plan ahead. Organic-Agriware will maximize the practical benefits for organic farmers and the viability of their crop production as well as it will help advisors to provide farmers with more accurate and concrete guidelines. The implementation of Organic Agriware by Agro-Know is based on strategic partnership with ICROFS and SEGES.
The project’s expected outcome(s)
Unlike other similar applications, Organic-AgriWare focuses on organic agriculture and provides a unique access point to Organic Eprints and its entire open access scientific knowledge base. All recent publications on organic information, dissemination material and organic sector specific data will provide every user with a broad range of state of the art research information on issues that are critical to the everyday reality of the organic agriculture community.
The Organic-AgriWare application could be used by anyone interested in organic agriculture, however, the targeted customer segments are agricultural advisors and organic farmers. Organic AgriWare is projected to be offered in a freemium model, with the free version offering the ability to receive information on organic agriculture and users will be provided with advanced search tools in order to access relevant content from research papers hosted in Organic Eprints. In premium version, users will be provided with tailor made scientific information based on their specific location, the crop type, the local climate and the current weather conditions.
Agro-Know has a long experience in the agricultural information & data management, and various team members have already participated in a number of projects related to organic agriculture, such us Organic.Edunet, Organic.Balkanet, CerOrganic & Organic.Lingua. Agro-Know works on technology solutions that provide added value to agri-food information and data.
The International Centre for Research in Organic Food (ICROFS) coordinates and facilitates user oriented high quality research in organic food systems. ICROFS hosts and administrates Organic Eprints, an international open access archive for papers and projects related to research in organic food and farming. ICROFS has been a long time collaborator of Agro-Know through its participation in the VOA3R ICT-PSP project, where a number of current Agro-Know team members supported various aspects of the project in collaboration with the Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET), one of the project partners.
The Knowledge Centre for Agriculture (SEGES – former Danish Agricultural Advisory Service / DAAS) is a two-level advisory system both owned and used by Danish farmers, currently involving about 3,000 farmers and 50 full time advisors. SEGES runs the website “LandbrugsInfo” which contains 150,000 documents and articles about all aspects of modern agricultural production.
