Participating in the 1st AgroHackathon in Montpellier

All of the participants of the 1st AgroHackathon

Two months ago the 1st AgroHackathon caught the eye of the Agroknow team, and of course the initial reaction was: “Agroknow should definitely be a part of such an event organized for the first time, worldwide!”.

Of course we could not go there empty-handed, so we sat down and discussed a lot about possible hack propositions. Being a part of the OpenMintEd project we decided to combine its needs with these of the agricultural community and came up with a proposal that would cover text and data extraction from pdf publications on viticulture research and annotation of the extracted information against known endpoints (more info can be found here, and here).… Click to read the full post

Testing e-services for digital content enrichment at the FREME Hackathon

The hackathon of the FREME project took place at the premises of the University of Leipzig, Germany between 11 and 12/11/2015. As expected, the hackathon aimed at testing the FREME e-services for multilingual and semantic enrichment of digital content. The testing was achieved by developing our client side programs, collaborating with each other, discussing and solving our main problems. Agro-Know was there, as one of the project partners and made a presentation about our AKstem product and how it benefits from the outcomes of the FREME project by integrating specific e-services – in fact, Agro-Know is one of the project’s business cases.… Click to read the full post

Can Hidden Hunger be visualized? A Vizathon aims to provide the answer!

On Saturday, May 30th 2015, three important organizations will joins forces in order to organize a Vizathon to bring together a variety of professionals to find better ways of using data to tell the story of Hidden Hunger (an issue affecting more than 2 billion people, according to IFPRI).

These organizations are:

  1. The Bread for the World Institute,  an institute that educates opinion leaders, policy makers, and the public about hunger in the United States and abroad. It is also the driving force behind the 2015 Hunger Report (the website is lovely and full of useful information – you have to check it out!)
  2. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), one of the 15 CGIAR Centers, that seeks sustainable solutions for ending hunger and poverty through research programs, partnerships and the production of high quality research that can shape policies, investments and programs, contributing to a productive, sustainable and resilient agricultural and food system.

Agro-Know & Future Food Hack 2015

GODAN_logoThere has been a lot of discussion around a hackathon to be collocated with the 2015 GODAN Workshop during the preparations and organization of the workshop itself. I was happy to be personally involved in the planning/organization of the workshop with a great team of people from USDA, DFID (UK), CABI, FAO and CGIAR, among others and the discussion on related hackathons and other satellite events on open agri-food data was on the table. What I had in my hands was the potential contribution from our two FP7 projects activated in this field; agINFRA and SemaGrow (Agro-Know being an active partner in both), as well as the support from the rest of the team.… Click to read the full post

Agro-Know in GODAN 2015 Workshop & Future Food Hack

GODANGODAN (The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition) is an initiative which, as its name states pretty clearly, fosters global actions that create and share agricultural and nutritional open data. From its birth at the Open Government Partnership Summit, on October 2013, GODAN has undertaken the quest of formulating a “high- level” policy on open data. Being a mediator between current agriculture and open data activities, it has become a rally point for stake holders to gather and puzzle out long standing global problems. The realization that the absence of international policies and openness of data diminishes the effectiveness of research and innovation, prompted GODAN to generate a shared agenda with the intention to “increase the supply, quality and interoperability of data”.… Click to read the full post
