The Stevia Hellas Coop is a cooperative of farmers in the region of Fthiotida, based in the town of Lamia (Greece). It is bringing together farmers that are cultivating Stevia as a plant that forms the basis for natural sweetener products that can substitute sugar. Their first product is called La Mia Stevia and is at the final stages of packaging and pilot distribution.
Agro-Know is working closely farmer cooperatives (like Stevia Hellas Coop and the Danish Agricultural Advisory Service – DAAS) in facilitating access of the farmers to information that they need. We recently had the opportunity to discuss about a new idea that allows sharing of agricultural tools & machinery among farmers, with Thomi Giotopoulou, one of the people working on this concept. The idea seems to be really promising, especially in the case of Greece (but also for similar countries), where farms are limited in size and farmers do not always have the funds required for actually buying an expensive piece of agricultural machinery; instead they are willing to share the equipment they already have and in return borrow a tool that they do not own and use it for as long as needed before returning it to its owner.… Click to read the full post
Could we develop showcases that could show to governments the impact of open data? This is exactly what we are trying to do in the Greek Open Data Working Group.
The Open Data Working Group
operated in the context The Greek Free/Open Source Software Society (GFOSS) was set up two years ago and aims at proposing to the Greek Government answers about the following questions
- which are the most useful and critical data from public sector that should be opened
- which are the main barriers for the dissemination and exploitation of open data by citizens and stakeholders from public and private sector
- which should be the legal framework for opening the data
The main initial outcome of the working group towards that direction is a set of showcases per sector in order to show the social and economical impact of open data.
